Newsworthy Wedding?
I’ve followed Taylor Swift's music for years now. Not sure if I’d qualify myself as a "Swiftie," but enough that her name catches my eye. So when I saw “Taylor Swift Rented M.S.G. for July 2 (100 people) and July 3 (1000 Guests), I clicked. But the more I read, the more I questioned why this was even newsworthy at all, since I could already hear the criticisms about her decision regarding her OWN wedding.
The article details street closures, hotel bookings, and a permit filed weeks in advance. It even quoted Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch calling this event "unprecedented" and “historic. And for what? A wedding? Two people celebrating their love? Critiques about a decision they’ll remember forever? Comments like “M.S.G.? That's where they chose?” Comments that make it seem like it's impossible for them to live a normal life. That maybe there's a chance that the venue she picked held meaning. After all, Swift grew up in New York, sang about it, and has long called it home.
The article presents this as news, but it's really just feeding a spectacle that puts the couple at greater risk for an event that should be private and memorable. Maybe that's why she chose a “windowless environment!”
So what's the point? To inform? Sure. But it also opens doors for more critiques and jeopardises their safety. I can already picture NYC that week: swarming crowds, horrific traffic. First the Knicks game, now behold a “royal wedding.” The city is looking bright, but at what cost?
